2017 Marine Biology Research Programs Professional Advisory Committee

Greetings and welcome 2017 Professional Advisory Committee (PAC),

Thank you for taking the time from your busy schedule to further support the Marine Biology Research Program (MBRP) and our Career and Technical Education Program (CTE) at the New York Harbor School (NYHS).

This year marks our 7th year providing inner city students the opportunity to access a quality STEM career path. Most of the students who participate in this program have gone on to major in highly competitive college paths with scholarships. We have awarded over 300 college credits in science research, natural resources management, and oceanography to students before they even begin their college career. Our students have come in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the New York City Science and Engineering Fair. They have logged thousands of hours of internship experience with many organizations that are present here today. The projects the students work on in the Program affect policy in our city and affect the lives of millions of New Yorkers. For the first time in NYS, we have two students who are certified in geospatial technology. The students in our program have been awarded the most CTE credentials in the school. And most importantly, we are producing self-reliant, environmentally conscious young leaders who are ready to engage in our challenging world. All this has been possible because of the commitment and support your organizations have lent to the instructors over the years. This year in particular, our program is up for its five-year review. It is my expectation that with your support and all our accomplishments so far, we’ll be approved by the State to be able to continue to offer the opportunities we have been. Below is a list of items that we’ll be accomplishing and that stand at the heart of what our program has to offer.

Agenda Items:

  1. Are the proposed project plans viable as high school and beginner college level work?
  2. Do the completed projects fulfill beginner college report requirements?
  3. Define Post-secondary science standards.
  4. Define Industry standards.

Thanks again for coming today and on behalf of the MBRP, we wish you all the best for the Holiday Season,

Mauricio Gonzalez
